Starting/Growing your own locks(dreads)

Starting/Growing your own locks(dreads)

Hair types:

Curly-

  1. Take a section of hair about a 1 inch to 2 inch's for a nice medium to thick dreadlock. After picking your dread size comb you whole head accordingly.
  2. Use the two-strand twist method. Split section of hair into to and twist those pieces around each other. use a bit of wax or gel to hold twist in place. Twist take advantage in the natural coil pattern in curly hair.
  3. Roll your hair into twists by palm rolling with a little bit of gel or wax into it forms a cylindrical shape.
  4. Continue to roll or twist roots of hair every 3 weeks as your hair grows.

Straight/Thin/Stringy

There happens to be quite a few ways you can lock straight/thin/stringy hair, but here's one.

  1. begin with clean, dry hair. It can be washed a couple of days before but not completely dirty. if you want shampoo it before hand but do not condition it. It is a myth that dirty hair helps dreads. Grease and such actually prohibit real dread formation.
  2. Even though this seems backwards you have to blow out and comb through your hair so that no knots remain.
  3. For this hair you must use the backcombing hair method. Separate your hair into sections, starting with the underside of the hair and working your way forward. It would be a good idea to put rubberbands around each sectioned off piece of hair to keep place before you start dreading. remove rubber bands before you back comb though.
  4. back comb or tease your hair, starting at the root and working your way down the section of hair, making sure to go over it a couple of times to tighten knots.
  5. Twist the dread. play wit it. a dip in the ocean or rubbing fine wood fire ash can help but remember to wash it out afterwards.
  6. Re-attach the rubberbands at the end of your locks.

Coarse-

  1. Wash your hair and let it dry. Part into sections 1 inch -2 inch. use a rubberband to keep sections in place. put a natural product in your hair like beeswax, pure shea butter or any dread wax. Avoid using vasaline, this causes your dreads to clump up.
  2. Use the palm rolling technique. this will make your dreads look polished.
  3. As you continue to twist each section put more wax on each section of hair. The more you twist your hair the faster it will lock up.
And remember if you have no clue how to do any of this, that's why we have hair salons.
