Should Arsenal drop Mesut Ozil after Bayern Munich horror show?
The 25-year-old missed from the spot with the game still level in Wednesday's Champions League clash and went on to put in an underwhelming performance in the 2-0 defeat

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil will face a barrage of criticism following his below-par performance againstBayern Munich but does he now deserve to be dropped?

The Germany international missed a first-half penalty in the Gunners' 2-0 defeat against the Bundesliga leaders as goals from Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller secured a healthy first-leg advantage for the visitors.

Ozil went missing in the second half and failed to put in sufficient defensive work once his side were reduced to 10 men with Jack Wilshere berating his team-mate at one point for a failure to chase back and track his runner.

Ozil's passing stats over the 90 minutes make for grim reading for Arsenal fans too, with the 25-year-old achieving a completetion rate of just 54%, while his only shot on target was the tame spot-kick that was comfortably saved by Manuel Neuer.

The former Real Madrid midfielder, a record £42 million signing in the summer, has struggled to make a significant impact at the Emirates Stadium in recent months despite a hugely promising start to his career in north London.

After five goals and numerous assists in his first four months with the club, Ozil has gone off the boil thus far in 2014 and has come under criticism for a his failure to adopt a leading role in his side's push for honours this season.

So the question is: should Arsene Wenger make the bold decision to wield the axe and leave Ozil out of his next starting XI?

The likes of Tomas Rosicky, Serge Gnabry and Mikel Arteta, who was suspended for Wednesday's first-leg clash, will now come into contention to feature from the start against Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday - but should they replace Ozil?

Aaron Ramsey, who had emerged as Arsenal's stand-out player in the first half of the season before being hit by a thigh injury in December, is also set to return in the coming weeks and could put the German playmaker's starting spot under further threat.
