In God We Trust... Really?

In God We Trust... Really?

When times are bad, politicians do what they do best: try to make themselves look better. Instead of focusing on things that actually matter, like the ecomony, taxes, jobs, or pretty much anything else, they spend their time reaffirming "In God We Trust" as the United States motto. Politicians evoke god whenever they want to gain favor with the public. Now they're using their legislative power to win over grandma.

Apparently "In God We Trust" is under attack, and the noble politicians had to step in and rescue it from... whomever. What purpose does this motto serve? E pluribus unum at least has a meaning, and moreover a goal that's both clear and positive: unity. What clear message does "In God We Trust" communicate? What positive message, what goal, what purpose does it teach? Trust in god. Great. Which god? If we pick one, then everyone who doesn't believe that particular god isn't a "True American"? What's next, restrooms and water fountains labeled "Christians only"? Will non-Christians have to sit in the back of the bus?

If the "god" in "In God We Trust" isn't defined, then the motto is absolutely useless. If "god" can be Allah, Ganesha, Christ, Yahweh, Busta Rhymes or my friend's cat Sammy, then not only is the motto pointless, it does the opposite of E pluribus unum insofar as it discourages unity. And let's not forget how this motto alienates anyone who doesn't believe in a god - or believes in many gods. I guess Hindus and atheists don't belong in the USA.

Yet our beloved politicians felt the need to secure a few more votes by yet again evoking the ever-ambiguous name of "god." This is our tax dollars at work, folks. Anyone else want a refund?
