Judgmentalism

Judgmentalism

I think judgmentalism has become the one human flaw I despise most. A judgmental attitude implies feelings of superiority over another, and oftentimes delusions of grandeur. It often implies closed-mindedness, for we tend to judge most harshly that which (and those with whom) we [1] disagree most vehemently and [2] understand the least. I hate closed-mindedness. How much progress have we hindered, how much joy have we denied ourselves, how much pain and suffering and brokenness have we caused because we refused to question, to explore, to wonder, to think, to challenge conventions and traditions, to consider new ideas and embark on journeys into brave new worlds? To be judgmental is to push others away because they are viewed as undeserving of love, acceptance and empathy. To be judgemental is to be so set in one's ways that even the most innocent inquiry or peaceful dissent of opinion is met with vitriol and venom, and at times even violence.

Rather than judgmentalism, we need to embrace the symbiosis of compassion and discernment. Our compassion is guided by our discernment: "love thy neighbor," but don't accept all things unconditionally. Compassion does not imply tolerating such vices as sexism, racism, prejudice or hate, or whatever the hell these guys do. Our discernment is tempered by our compassion. We may want truth, but we won't always agree on what truth is. We can allow our differences to lead us to draw swords, or we can stand in solidarity, encouraging each other to open our minds to new ideas, think critically about those ideas, understanding that no one has all the big questions all figured out yet, and do our best to follow the arguments wherever they may lead.
