I never thought I'd see this day. For a while we civilians forgot about bin Laden. Of course, as recent events demonstrate, there have been those who have not forgotten, and continued to work to bring about some justice. And it's not as though the rest of us actually forgot; more accurately, we put Osama to the back of our minds because we thought he'd never be found. Many saw bin Laden's survival as yet one more blunder in an ongoing series of blunders in a highly controversial "war against terrorism."
Countless numbers of Americans celebrated last night in much the same manner as they would if their favorite sports team had just won the championship. Last night and this morning, Facebook has been filled with reposts of "America, Fuck Yeah!" and people expressing their joy over a man's death. Don't get me wrong. I am glad he's dead too. I'm also patriotic. I love my country. If I didn't, I wouldn't care at all about her citizens' actions.
We should understand that this is a somber moment. This is a moment a decade in the making. How many lives were shattered by this man? How many lives are still affected by 9/11? We cheer over a man's death while many responded to the news with tears and mourning; not because they grieve for bin Laden, but because 9/11 may as well have happened yesterday for these people. For those whose lives were devastated by 9/11, what is a decade? Ten years may as well be ten minutes when it comes to matters of the heart.
Much respect and love to our troops. bin Laden is gone, but as we begin this coming week, remember that nothing has changed. Things are much as they were before. Terrorism is as much of a threat today as it was yesterday - if not more so. Osama now has the opportunity to reach martyr status, which only empowers the religious zealots even more.
Let's not forget that the job of bringing peace to the world by stopping those who wish to see us dead is far from over. Now more than ever is the time for all of us to steel our minds and be mindful of world events. Moments like these are when the world sees who we really are. Let us show the world that we have strength, dignity, pride, honor, love, courage and respect. Let us show the world our quality.
