The lower back tattoo or tramp stamp tattoo is a physical decoration with a lingering scent of sexy. It seduces and sedates, it makes guys and girls turn their head to look in awe, admiration, desire, and lust. The tattoos are usually oblong and wide because of the shape of the lower back. This allows for a large variety of shapes and designs to be used just for that area of the body. Lower back tattoos accentuate the female figure and have much different stigmas than other common body parts women usually get done (like the ankle or shoulder-blade). Tramp stamp tattoos usually leave many people with a preconceived notion of the type of girl that would wear one. One pictures the Hollywood clubber girl wearing almost nothing and casually powdering her nose in the bathroom, a promiscuous California girl, or a porn star. Lets be honest here, usually the less innocent girls are seen wearing them. Many playboy bunny tattoos, butterfly tattoos, and other tribal designs are seen between those two sexy dimples. But It makes me want to know if all the girls who wear them are real sluts or if they just like the way it looks and the attention it gives them. Why get a tattoo there, the lower back of all places. Are they sending a message and associating themselves with a certain lifestyle or image? Is it an attitude? Maybe I’m just another guy judging a whole bunch of girls but if it weren’t such a statement then why would so many girls get them done. The lower back tattoo is clearly a cultural phenomenon since so many women in the same age and demographic get it.
So before I got ahead of myself and started philosophizing I did a little bit of research. I went online and searched up “lower back tattoos” just to see what came up. I found out that while there is the sexy aspect there are other symbols associated with the lower back tattoo. Many of the patterns and designs that came up were there to symbolize certain meanings. Lotus and flower tattoos are chosen for symmetry and color. Some artists say that flower tattoos, especially the lotus, is ideal for the tailbone because it has buds, seed pods, and flowers to represent the past, present, and future respectively. Another interesting pattern I learned about was the Shakti lower back tattoo for a fusion of consciousness that is believed to reside at the base of spine in Hindu teachings. In Celtic and Welsh mythology animals symbolize vitality and fertility. Serpents and dragons symbolize trouble and slyness which is good for the mischievous females out there.
I still don’t know the answers to all my questions or why and how the lower back tattoo got to be so notorious and infamous but it is still interesting to think about what it means to so many girls out there. Perhaps the tramp stamp tattoo will lose its status of sexy and will turn to something people look down upon or perhaps it will continue to reign as one of the hottest tattoos on a woman’s body… if and only if she can pull it off.
